Advice to Buyers
The SHCGB is concerned that buyers should purchase their Siberian from a responsible breeder.
- Always buy direct from the breeder and see the puppy with its mother and littermates. Litters tend to be small, be prepared to book a puppy and wait for it. Be wary of a breeder who always has puppies available - they may be breeding excessively.
- The breeder should have a good reputation among other breeders. The breeder should screen their buyers carefully - they ask a lot of questions and may wish to view your home but should be happy to answer all your queries. The breeder should be glad to give advice throughout your dog’s life on all aspects, showing, working, health, etc.
- They will undertake to have back dogs they have bred or provide for them until re-homed, if the owner is unable to keep the dog for a good reason.
- They aim to preserve the Breed’s looks, physique, arctic characteristics and working ability. They formulate their breeding plans to produce good quality Siberians and reduce the incidence of hereditary problems. They breed from hip scored Siberians which have also been tested clear of serious eye defects.
- They should be Members of the SHCGB - whose members are bound by the Clubs Code of Ethics - which covers many of the above points. They should provide puppy buyers with all necessary documentation and advice on caring for their puppy. The most important document is the Kennel Club Registration Certificate - this should not be confused with a ‘pedigree’, which is merely a report of parentage.
