Allan & Carole Todd
When we decide to have a dog, the Husky was the one we chose. Knowing very Iittle about the breed, we needed some information and having discussed owning a rescue dog, Carole obtained the phone number for Husky Welfare. After many phone calls and lots of advice and information given to us by Joi Barnes, The Welfare Secretary, we were given the OK to own a rescue dog.

The house and garden were vetted to make sure they were suitable and not long after that Joi introduced us to 'REGGIE' a five-year-old black and white Siberian. He settled in straight away and was never a problem. All he wanted was T.L.C. and the settee.

We were soon down at Welfare again, to collect our second rescue dog, who had been kennelled with Reggie. She had a bad start and had been treated badly, but to see her running around, tail wagging and jumping everywhere, we could not resist this beautiful bundle of fun named 'JEANNIE'. She also fitted in straight away and was good company for Reggie.

To date we have had seven rescue dogs, sadly Reggie is no longer with us, and 'RUSKIE' (whom I am sure Joi could write a book about) had to be rehomed with another family in a country environment, to help his permanent health problems. Since then we have had another four: 'CHUCK', 'NEECKA', 'FERN' and 'KAI'.

We do not show our dogs, but Neecka and Fern have competed in rallies and now Kai is old enough, he has since joined the team and even ran at Aviemore this year, with two of our non welfare dogs.

Our one welfare dog, Chuck, has developed an eye problem, Corneal Dystrophy, but it does not impair his vision too much, (he can still see food at 50 paces) but he likes to stay indoors on his favourite chair. When we go training or to rallies and the treats come out, he's the first one there - and the first back in the van, when the others have gone, licking his lips, waiting for the next meal. Crafty old devil.

I hope this will give you some idea of what owing a Welfare Husky is like. I am sure there are many more people out there who own Welfare Huskies, who can relate to this, and no doubt add their own experiences.
