The Humfress family
We decided a year or so ago that we really wanted to add a dog to our family, initially we were looking at golden retrievers and were going to adopt a rescue one, however one day we saw a husky puppy in our local area and my husband remembered how much he'd always wanted one, he got so into researching them (as he hadn't been with retrieivers) that I felt that it was better to look at husky's as the dog was going to be pet to the whole family, including hubby, son 13 and daughter 9.

We contacted the husky club, Rachel was enormously helpful and sooner than expected we were heading to Leicestershire one Friday evening to meet Akuma, well we'd already decided that we DEFINITELY weren't taking him home that night, we would just say hi to him, spend a bit of time with him and then go away and decide what we wanted to do. Well it was love at first sight, the first thing he did was lick our daughter on the face and within a few minutes he'd jumped up to my shoulders and licked me on the face, he couldn't give us enough love and oh boy does he like his treats. We took him for a walk, played with him, fed him, he proudly did his first poop for us to pick up!!! And we couldn't leave him there!!!!!!!!! His foster carers were fantastic, they gave us some food, his lead, poopy bags and his blanket, lots of advice about his likes and dislikes and then off we went at 9pm with the new member of our family, he jumped in the car without a second glance (I still feel bad about that!) and that was that, we had our dog!

We had a lovely few days, they were a bit bumpy cos we are new dog owners (I had a elkhound when I was little), but Akuma is used to lots of attention and doesn't seem to think he's really a husky so it didn't take us long to settle down. Having said he doesn't know he's a husky he does KNOW he loves food, he is addicted to chocolate, we never give it to him, infact he was so naughty even about doggy chocs that we threw them out and gave him chopped carrots instead! He eats them cos they are food and he cannot leave food alone. We started off slowly leaving him for a short time every couple of days or so, I don't work but I do go out and I go to the gym regularly, I didn't want to abandon him but I didn't want to have to change my routines too much either so we eased him into them. He was fine, had the run of the house until one day he decided to tip all the bins out upstairs to see if there was anything yummy to eat, so we started closing the bedroom doors, then he decided he was going to mooch around the kitchen and see what he could find to eat in there, it didn't mind if it was in a vacuum sealed box, he'd get into it and eat it all!!! So we shut him out of the kitchen (he's never been crated so we don't want to resort to that with him already being 5 years old). that went well for a while but then he started foraging for anything that might smell like it once even touched food!!! He doesn't destroy anything that hasn't touched food and he doesn't climb up on the furniture but goodness help it if it whiffs just a little bit of something edible! So now he has his own crate, its called the conservatory!!! Its huge for a doggy, he's allowed to get up on the couch in there and I leave him with a kong to play with for a while, I've snuck around the back of the house after he's been left a while and he's usually asleep on the couch of course when I get into the house he stands at the door and acts like he's missed me terribly and hasn't been able to settle down at all!!!!!!!!!!

Walking is fun, he walks very fast, so he has a halti collar most of the time, the other thing is I think he walks fast cos he doesn't like exercise and would rather get it over with as quickly as possible, he seems to enjoy going through the woods some days and others he'll pull me away if he can. He HATES the rain so goodness knows what he'll think when it actually snows and as soon as we get home he has a long drink of water and then settles down for a lonnnnnnnnnnnnnng nap. He is very well behaved, Rachel informed me that huskies will do anything if there is something in it for them, thus he sits at the roadside and waits till we say cross, he sits to have his lead put on and off, he'll sit to be groomed as long as his eyes can focus on a nice treat and he'll sit and wait until he's told he's allowed to eat his dinner.

He is very lovable, obviously not just to us but he definitely loves us most. I was abroad for a few days in september. Hubby stayed home for that time (not cos of kids but cos of dog!) and they really got closer (although he managed to wean Akuma off sleeping by our bed and he now sleeps outside our bedroom door. Anyway when I came home Akuma was delighted, he couldn't believe it and he attached himself to me like glue for the next few days, it was a lovely homecoming and made me feel like I had really earned his love and his trust.

I can't believe we did it, we've made changes and we've welcomed this lovely dog into our home, but he's welcomed us too and decided that as a family we are worthy of his love. He knows his place, he's very happy with it and he truly is a wonderful companion and our "baby".
