Jan & Norman Farmer from Leicestershire
We had three sibes, all bought from breeders, all males.

We've never wanted to breed, but wanted to have a bitch (little girlie), the problem there being if we had a girlie from a breeder we would have to deal with her coming into season, and we knew we would have problems with fighting within our boys who would be desperate to get their wicked way with her.

So we sat and talked it through and decided that we could have the best of both worlds if we had a rescue dog...a girlie and spayed. We contacted welfare and were put on the list, we did'nt wait long, a couple of weeks at the most when the phone call came. A girlie had come into welfare that they believed would be just what we were looking for. We could'nt get down to see her fast enough, unfortunately it did'nt work out and our boys did'nt get on with her. So sadly we went home feeling very down in the mouth about this failed meeting with her...were we ever going to get the little girl we so wanted...would our boys ever like one enough to let her come and own us as they do.

The next day, still gutted about the day before and our disaterous meeting with the dogs, we took ours training. When we arrived at the forest, we were met by friends that were also there to train their dogs, " we've got an addition to our lot ", we were told, and out from their van they bought a lovely little girl, " is she yours ? " we asked, " no, we're fostering her for welfare " was the reply, " her names Chinook, we got her yesterday", she was beautiful. We told our friends about what had happened the day before with the meeting of our boys and the welfare girl, and how disappointed we were about it all, we also said that we did'nt think that our boys would ever accept another into the pack and that maybe we would have to stay as a three dog family. Our friend then suggested that we introduce them one at a time to Chinook, Norm agreed, i said nothing, and Norm got the first of ours out of the van, he walked him over..i got greyer and was just about to lay the first egg..when they met..and nothing happened, then the second came out...nothing ...and then the third, the Victor Meldrew of the sibe world...Demon, Norm walked him over, and he set his eyes on Chinook, and growled, Chinook took one look and jumped on his head to play... oh my god, she's going to die, but it did'nt happen, Demon was so startled that he just stood there, then looked at me as if to say " GET IT OFF ". We then decided to take them all for a walk, by this time i was beaming that this one had'nt gone the same way as the one the day before, the walk went really well, for some reason Chinook decided that Demon was fun and he needed to be jumped on at every available minuet. We then rang welfare, and said that we had met a sibe that was with fosterers and that we knew she was the one for us and our boys. They agreed that we could have her, we took it steady, and they met a few more times at training, our friends did'nt mind keeping her a bit longer. We introduced her to the pleasures of running with our boys on the rig...and then the day came and we collected her and took her home. She has since become a valued member of our team, rules the boys with an iron paw, runs us ragged..and has represented Leicestershire in the Dog Of The Year Awards run by the RSPCA, of which we had to do a nerve wrecking live interview with Radio Leicester, all about owning sibes, but mostly about Chinook..our special welfare girlie.
