Kovu and Simba moved in with us a year ago. Now two and a half years old they're everything we wanted and more. originally they were to live mostly outside - as we were told this is what they were used to. So we spent three weeks building the biggest dog pen I've ever seen with a custom built kennel. gradually they seem to have inched their way into the house - now they sleep on the bed (good job it's a kingsize!) and prefer the sofa to the floor when watching TV but i don't think they are in any danger of becoming couch potatoes - it's hard work keeping up with them! Within two weeks they seemed to have settled into their routine - in fact they adapted far more quickly than we did. Kovu likes nothing more than to sit next to you and be made a fuss of til your arm drops off whilst Simba prefers to stalk his boundaries, spy on the neighbours out the bedroom window and when he feels like it, plays fetch with one of his many soft toys. Ruth from welfare, Mike and Dawn Hammond who did our home check were great giving us all the information we could ever need. infact, we were so prepared for two boisterous, destructive, demanding, etc. etc. dogs that we were surprised to find that they didn't seem to want to chew anything - occasionally Kovu will shred some paper, then there's the four dustpan and brush sets that Simba has eaten, oh, and the recycling bin is emptied from time to time (but only the vodka or wine bottles!) but on the whole they haven't really damaged anything in the house. even if they had, they'd probably be forgiven, they give so much fun and affection to us and all they ask in return is a little love and affection and to be fed and exercised regularly. Sadly, they have had their share of illness in the last year. Kovu suffered a fit in the first week with us - thankfully he hasn't had one since. He also had a benign tumor removed a couple of months ago and a second lump has appeared. we're waiting for results now and hoping he won't need more surgery. Simba has had ear infections twice which we suspect is the result of continuous digging - no doubt we can expect more holes to appear in the coming summer though hopefully no infections. we hoped to work the dogs this season but Kovu's surgery prevented it. hopefully he will be fit enough to run by the end of the summer. We definitely made the right decision to have the boys - though sometimes they act as if they chose us and allow us to live with them in their house! we're already contemplating adding to the family so we'll be looking around for a suitable companion in the near future. As first time Husky owners, the advice we got from those involved in the welfare scheme before having the dogs, and from Wendy Chambers & her husband Alan, has been invaluable. we'd recommend a welfare husky to anyone who can make a committment and provide a loving home.
