Sonia & Mike Plevin from Wiltshire
I had always dreamt of owning a Siberian Husky ever since I was a little girl after reading and watching White Fang and also Call Of The Wild. I had watched them with my family and have never forgotten the Husky since those days. I remember my father talking about them and I think deep down he also would have loved to have one. My husband knew how I felt about these dogs and I would have done anything for one. As breeders are very hard to find, unless you are in the know it's almost impossible to locate a husky to buy. Even then you hear of so many stories about inbreeding etc. that if you've not an awful lot of knowledge things don't always work out for the best. As I worked one Sunday, my husband was busy searching the Internet, just for curiosity he looked up the Siberian Husky, most were American sites, but he'd continued to browse. Eventually to his surprise there it was The Siberian Husky Rescue & Welfare of Great Britain. Without hesitation took all the details and phoned Mrs. Adrienne Benyon for further information, she told him how it would all work and of course what the rescue is all about. Mike, my husband, had told her to expect a call from me when I returned from work As I walked through the door Mike said, "I've found something that you've always wanted, have a guess what?" My first reply was "an Astra Convertible!" "No, something better than that! The Siberian Husky rescue! You'd better phone and have a chat yourself, the lady is called Adrienne and she seems ever so nice I had a good talk with her earlier." I leapt to the phone and rang immediately. I was told to expect a call from Ruth, who rang a few days later. A man called Simon would be in touch with reference to vetting us. Simon came out on a bank holiday weekend and brought one of his own dogs with him, Bea, a beautiful red bitch. I had only seen the black and greys and not particularly keen on reds until she turned up she was one of the most beautiful dogs I'd seen. Now I was not bothered what colour Husky we had so long as we passed the vetting process. Of course Simon told us all the bad points first, walking must be on a lead at all times, they will leave hair everywhere the go, etc. but we were not to be put off and waited impatiently to find out or not if we were suitable to receive a dog. The same evening of the vetting we had a call from Ruth to say that everything was OK, and would we be interested in a 12 month old dog? The only thing was he had to be kept company all the time, as we both worked it was not possible to have him. My heart sank, as I knew it could be some time before we had the offer of another. The following Wednesday Ruth rang again, "have you thought about taking on 2 dogs?" Well it was a dream come true. She told us that there were two 11-year-old dogs that desperately needed a home if we were interested to call the lady who was fostering them. I called Lynda Pritchard and spoke to her reference the 2 dogs, she told us their age again and about their temperament, etc. and that they were reds although one very light in colour. We arranged to visit on the Saturday when we were both off as she lived in Melton Mowbray, which was a fair distance for us to travel. On Thursday we thought that we couldn't wait until Saturday, so we rearranged to visit on the Friday evening straight after work. When we arrived at Lynda's and saw the dogs we knew then that we couldn't leave them behind she had had them for nearly a month and stated that they were two really well behaved dogs. We got home that night they had travelled very well indeed as they didn't know us and the poor things must have been really confused being moved again. Of course we had some howling but only when they were in their pen as we were at work. Now we leave them in the house and nobody hears a peep out of them. They may be 11 years old but we didn't care! They arc 2 extremely well behaved, loveable dogs. And believe me when you get their leads out for a walk you'd think that they were youngsters the way the jump around and pull you out of the door! We would not be without them; it's as if we've had them all their lives the way that they have settled in. They really are two brilliant dogs and we arc looking forward to some great times. So it may only be 5-6 years but those dogs will get a great amount of love in that time and it will break our hearts when the time comes that they are taken from this earth. One last thing, a very big thank-you to Adrienne, Ruth, Simon and Lynda and all the rest of the rescue team that do so much good for all the other dogs. As you can gather from this Nero & Ceaser, ( the boys) are really well. more stories |
